American-Standard, 1960
Here we see the
fruits of the Tile Council of America’s 1958-59
campaign to promote tile as a decorative accessory
rather than just a purely utilitarian surface covering.
Magazine spreads showed, in addition to the expected
bathrooms and patios, tiled kitchens, tiled carports
and even tiled living rooms. The result for the
brave souls who actually tried this must have been
something like living in a parking garage. Another
late 1950s fad was the wall-hung toilet, a nice
enhancement to the institutional look. |
